New border restrictions are in place across Australia as the number of COVID-19 cases in New South Wales and Victoria continue to grow.

The changes have left thousands of people who had travelled for the holidays scrambling to get back home or face mandatory quarantine.

Here are the restrictions for each state and territory if you have been in New South Wales or Victoria.

Victoria

Victoria will close its border with New South Wales from 11:59pm on Friday, January 1.

Those who arrive in the 24 hours before the border closure will still need to take a COVID-19 test.

Victorians who arrive back from NSW after the deadline will need to go into hotel quarantine.

Those from the Blue Mountains and Wollongong areas will be barred from entering Victoria from midnight on January 1.

People travelling from those areas before then must apply for a new permit, be tested within 24 hours of arriving in Victoria and self-quarantine at home for 14 days from when they left the NSW regions.

Victoria's border is already effectively closed to the northern beaches, Greater Sydney and NSW Central Coast regions.

Western Australia

Western Australia will close its border with Victoria from midnight on Thursday, December 31.

Anyone who has entered WA from Victoria since December 21 will have to go into quarantine immediately for 14 days from their date of arrival.

They will also need to get a COVID-19 test on day 11 after their arrival or if they develop symptoms.

People travelling from Victoria will no longer be able to enter WA unless they are an exempt traveller.

WA's border is already closed to NSW.

South Australia

South Australia will close its border with New South Wales from 12:01am on Friday, January 1.

Travellers from NSW will be banned from entering SA unless they are essential travellers, returning South Australians or permanently relocating.

A 100-kilometre buffer zone will apply for people living in border communities, including Broken Hill and Wentworth.

People transiting to SA via NSW will also have an exemption, provided they do not stop in NSW on the way.

SA's border with Victoria remains open.

Premier Steven Marshall said on Thursday that there was no plan to reimpose border restrictions with Victoria and the Government would continue to monitor the situation.

Northern Territory

The Northern Territory will close its border to travellers from greater metropolitan Sydney from midnight tonight.

Those who arrive after midnight will go into mandatory quarantine at either Howard Springs in Darwin or in Alice Springs.

Territorians are being urged to strongly reconsider travel to New South Wales and metropolitan Melbourne.

The NT's border with Victoria remains open.

Queensland

Queensland's border is closed to anyone who has been in Greater Sydney since December 11.

Residents wanting to return must complete a border declaration pass, can only enter the state by air and will be directed to quarantine in government-arranged quarantine.

Queensland's border with Victoria remains open.

ACT

The ACT border remains open to Victoria and New South Wales.

However, those who have been in Sydney's northern beaches from December 11 are required to quarantine for 14 days from when they left the area and get tested.
