With the world feeling the disastrous effects of climate change, there is a huge need to find sources of clean energy and reduce dependence on carbon-emitting fossil fuels. While solar and wind energy are a great help, these are dependent on weather conditions and unsuitable for base load or 24/7 power generation. On the other hand, current nuclear energy generation utilizes fission, which creates radioactive waste products that have multiple safety concerns.   6park.com

Since the discovery of nuclear physics almost a century ago, fusion has been considered the “Holy Grail” of energy. According to the late Stephen Hawking, nuclear fusion will be a world-changing development, providing humanity with an inexhaustible supply of clean energy.  6park.com

As the name suggests, nuclear fusion combines hydrogen atoms to generate energy – the same process that powers the Sun and other stars. Fusion power has the capacity to provide a near-limitless supply of reliable and affordable energy, with no dangerous radioactive byproducts or greenhouse gas emissions. A fusion reaction can generate around 4 million times more energy than a comparable mass of fossil fuel and about four times the energy of nuclear fission. In case of a system malfunction, a fusion reaction can be stopped immediately, removing the risk of catastrophic failure that led to the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters, which have created a distrust of nuclear power among the public worldwide.  6park.com

However, it is presently impossible to maintain and control a viable fusion reaction using current conventional technology, due to the extremely high temperatures involved. The plasma inside a reactor can be hotter than 100 million °C, basically creating a miniature star on the planet Earth.   6park.com

Recently, the US government’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced that it had achieved a net energy gain in fusion for the second time, building on a breakthrough from last year. While this is significant in proving that using nuclear fusion as an energy source is possible, there is yet another hurdle to obtaining the Holy Grail – solving the economy of scale involved in making fusion power plants a commercial reality.   6park.com

Novatron Fusion Group, a company headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is working on the NOVATRON fusion reactor design, which is an innovative solution for stable magnetic plasma confinement. According to the company, the NOVATRON concept, which was created by Swedish inventor and entrepreneur Jan Jäderberg, has theoretically and numerically demonstrated to minimize problems with plasma instabilities that have prevented the commercialization of fusion energy.   6park.com

The company says that its design is an open-field line confinement solution that provides the desired stability features lacking in any previously known fusion plasma confinement design. It creates a magnetic field that controls the plasma within the reactor, resulng in a more stable reaction while having a simpler, more commercially scalable design.  6park.com

In December 2022, Novatron Fusion Group entered a business and strategic partnership with KTH Royal Institute of Technology. It has also partnered with sustainable energy company EIT InnoEnergy, benefiting from its well-established, pan-European network. In its recently concluded seed funding round, the company raised €5 million and cemented multiple long-term partnerships, such as Climentum Capital, Industrifonden, and Santander InnoEnergy Climate Fund. It also received renewed investments from KTH Holding and EIT InnoEnergy.  6park.com

Novatron Fusion Group is a member of The Fusion Cluster in the UK and The Fusion Industry Association (FIA) in the US, two industry alliances dedicated to sharing knowledge and expertise to help solve the fusion energy problem.   6park.com

The NOVATRON fusion reactor design is intended for a steady-state continuous process with high reliability, providing stable plasma confinement with high energy density, which is crucial for creating a commercially viable nuclear fusion energy generation system. The first reactor is now being commissioned and developed by world-leading physicists, engineers, and academicians at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s Alfvén Laboratory in Stockholm.   6park.com

According to Novatron Fusion Group, it is looking to onboard more partners that will allow it to build the second, third, and fourth reactors, paving the way towards full commercialization of nuclear fusion energy, generating enough electricity to provide base load for the grid, complemented by renewables, such as solar and wind. By its estimates, this breakthrough will occur in the 2030s, which, from an industrial perspective, is virtually tomorrow.  6park.com

Novatron Fusion Group is now at the cusp of a major breakthrough, which will bring the dream of affordable, abundant, safe, and green nuclear energy for all one step closer towards reality. This will reduce and eventually replace humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels, allowing us to move to the next stage of our technological evolution.
