The new edition of the fifth series of the renminbi were issued to the general circulation on Aug 30. Their designers are from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, whose staff members were deeply involved in the designs of the second, third, fourth and fifth series of the renminbi.
Among these designers there is Zhou Lingzhao, who has turned 100 and was one of the chief designers of banknotes for the second, third and fourth series of the renminbi.
Zhou's career as an artist, designer and educator throughout several decades is a legend. Here is a photo taken by the famed photographer Meng Zhaorui during the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on Oct 1,1949. 6park.com
Meng gave the picture to Zhou in 2012. Why? Because it was Zhou and his wife, Chen Ruoju, also an artist, who painted the portrait of late chairman Mao Zedong that was hung on the outer wall of the Tian'anmen rostrum.

Zhou, together with Luo Gongliu and Wang Shikuo, another two professors from CAFA, worked on the design of the second series of renminbi in 1951. They collaborated with staff members of the Beijing Banknote Printing Factory, now the Beijing Banknote Printing and Minting Corp. 6park.comZhou recollects that they went to the Forbidden City and Summer Palace to seek inspiration, and they also traveled to the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi province. He says they painted copies of historical architecture, stone sculptures and statues, bronze ware and colorful floral patterns, and researched styles of the Dunhuang murals. 6park.comZhou says the patterned frames on 2 yuan and 3 yuan notes respectively were based on the mullioned windows of the Forbidden City and the ribbons on deities of the Dunhuang murals.

And he circled the denominations with patterns to resemble the shape of a traditional Chinese lamp. 6park.com

Zhou and his team continued with this philosophy to highlight Chinese motifs when designing the third and fourth series, thereafter transmitting elegance unique to Chinese aesthetics. 6park.comZhou's designs are currently on show at the Art for a New China exhibition, which runs through Oct 7 at CAFA's art museum to celebrate this centenarian.
