aircraft
any machine capable of flying by means of buoyancy or aerodynamic forces, such as a glider, helicopter, or aeroplane


ambulance
a motor vehicle designed to carry sick or injured people


articulated lorry or (informal) artic
a lorry made in two separate sections, a tractor and a trailer, connected by a pivoted bar


autocycle
a bicycle powered or assisted by a small engine


autorickshaw
(in India) a light three-wheeled vehicle driven by a motorcycle engine


barrow
a flat tray for transporting loads, usually carried by two people


bicycle or (informal) bike
a vehicle with a tubular metal frame mounted on two spoked wheels, one behind the other. The rider sits on a saddle, propels the vehicle by means of pedals that drive the rear wheel through a chain, and steers with handlebars on the front wheel

a motor coach, esp one used for sightseeing tours


chariot

coach

a large heavy horse-drawn covered wagon used in the 19th century

a small van used esp for delivery rounds

dray
any other vehicle or sledge used to carry a heavy load


dump truck or dumper-truck
a truck with a back end that can be tilted backward to dump a load through the opened tailgate


dustcart or (U.S. & Canad.) garbage truck
a road vehicle for collecting domestic refuse


estate car
a car with a comparatively long body containing a large carrying space, reached through a rear door: usually the back seats can be folded forward to increase the carrying space


fire engine
a heavy road vehicle that carries firefighters and firefighting equipment to a fire


fork-lift truck
a vehicle having two power-operated horizontal prongs that can be raised and lowered for loading, transporting, and unloading goods, esp goods that are stacked on wooden pallets


four-wheel drive
a system used in motor vehicles in which all four wheels are connected to the source of power


gritter (British)
a vehicle which spreads grit on roads during icy weather, or when icy conditions are expected


hansom or hansom cab
a two-wheeled one-horse carriage with a fixed hood. The driver sits on a high outside seat at the rear

a sloping rear end of a car having a single door that is lifted to open


hog (informal)
a large powerful motorcycle


Humvee or (informal) Hummer
a four-wheel drive military vehicle


hybrid car or hybrid
a car which uses electrical power to enhance the efficiency of the engine


jaunting car or jaunty car
a light two-wheeled one-horse car, formerly widely used in Ireland


JCB(trademark)
a type of construction machine with a hydraulically operated shovel on the front and an excavator arm on the back


Jeep(trademark)
a small military road vehicle with four-wheel drive


jet ski
a small self-propelled vehicle for one person resembling a scooter, which skims across water on a flat keel, and is steered by means of handlebars


jinricksha, jinrickshaw, jinrikisha or jinriksha
a small, two-wheeled carriage with a hood, pulled by one or two men, esp. formerly in East Asia


jitney (US, rare)
a small bus that carries passengers for a low price, originally five cents


kart, go-cart, or go-kart
a light low-framed vehicle with small wheels and engine used for recreational racing


kibitka
(in Russia) a covered sledge or wagon


komatik
a sledge having wooden runners and crossbars bound with rawhide, used by the Inuit and other related peoples


koneke (New Zealand)
a farm vehicle with runners in front and wheels at the rear


landaulet or landaulette
an early type of car with a folding hood over the passenger seats and an open driver's seat


light engine or (U.S.) wildcat

a fast lightly armoured vehicle used for reconnaissance

a two-wheeled cart or chaise, esp one with a hood


single-decker (British)
a bus with only one passenger deck


skibob
a vehicle made of two short skis, the forward one having a steering handle and the rear one supporting a low seat, for gliding down snow slopes


sledge or (especially U.S. & Canad.) sled
a vehicle mounted on runners, drawn by horses or dogs, for transporting people or goods, esp over snow


sleigh
a light vehicle on runners, usually horse-drawn, for carrying persons over snow and ice

a type of snowmobile


snowmobile
a small open motor vehicle for travelling on snow, steered by two skis at the front and driven by a caterpillar track underneath


snow plough
an implement or vehicle for clearing away snow


sports car
a production car designed for speed, high acceleration, and manoeuvrability, having a low body and usually adequate seating for only two persons


stagecoach
a large four-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle formerly used to carry passengers, mail, etc, on a regular route between towns and cities

a steam locomotive that carries its water supply in tanks mounted around its boiler


tanker
a ship, lorry, or aeroplane designed to carry liquid in bulk, such as oil


tarantass
a large horse-drawn four-wheeled Russian carriage without springs


taxi
a car, usually fitted with a taximeter, that may be hired, along with its driver, to carry passengers to any specified destination


telega
a rough four-wheeled cart used in Russia


three-wheeler
a light car that has three wheels


tipper truck or lorry
a truck or lorry the rear platform of which can be raised at the front end to enable the load to be discharged by gravity


toboggan
a light wooden frame on runners used for sliding over snow and ice


tonga
a light two-wheeled vehicle used in rural areas of India


tourer or (especially U.S.) touring car
a large open car with a folding top, usually seating a driver and four passengers


traction engine
a steam-powered locomotive used, esp formerly, for drawing heavy loads along roads or over rough ground. It usually has two large rear wheels and a rope drum for haulage purposes


tractor
a motor vehicle used to pull heavy loads, esp farm machinery such as a plough or harvester. It usually has two large rear wheels with deeply treaded tyres


trail bike
a motorcycle adapted for riding on rough tracks


trailer
a road vehicle, usually two-wheeled, towed by a motor vehicle: used for transporting boats, etc


train
a procession of people, vehicles, etc, travelling together, such as one carrying supplies of ammunition or equipment in support of a military operation


tram, tramcar, or (U.S. & Canad.) streetcar or trolley car
an electrically driven public transport vehicle that runs on rails let into the surface of the road, power usually being taken from an overhead wire


travois
a sled formerly used by the Plains Indians of North America, consisting of two poles joined by a frame and dragged by an animal


tricycle
a three-wheeled cycle, esp one driven by pedals


troika
a Russian vehicle drawn by three horses abreast


trolley
a device that collects the current from an overhead wire (trolley wire), third rail, etc, to drive the motor of an electric vehicle


trolleybus
an electrically driven public-transport vehicle that does not run on rails but takes its power from an overhead wire through a trolley


troop carrier
a vehicle, aircraft, or ship designed for the carriage of troops


truck
a vehicle for carrying freight on a railway; wagon


tuk-tuk
(in Thailand) a three-wheeled motor vehicle used as a taxi


tumbrel or tumbril
a farm cart for carrying dung, esp one that tilts backwards to deposit its load. A cart of this type was used to take condemned prisoners to the guillotine during the French Revolution


unicycle
a one-wheeled vehicle driven by pedals, esp one used in a circus, etc


van
a covered motor vehicle for transporting goods, etc, by road


wagon or waggon
any of various types of wheeled vehicles, ranging from carts to lorries, esp a vehicle with four wheels drawn by a horse, tractor, etc, and used for carrying crops, heavy loads, etc


wagonette or waggonette
a light four-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle with two lengthwise seats facing each other behind a crosswise driver's seat


wheelbarrow
a simple vehicle for carrying small loads, typically being an open container supported by a wheel at the front and two legs and two handles behind
