Yes to Kindness

Cana­di­ans are well-known for our hu­mil­ity, our sense of hu­mour, and for fin­ish­ing ev­ery state­ment with a raised eye­brow and an “eh.” But we’re not as well-known for our out­go­ing na­ture. 6park.com
That changed this spring as we rose to the chal­lenge of life dur­ing a pan­demic. Long walks be­came a na­tional pas­time and even the most re­served Cana­dian was ask­ing passersby how the day was go­ing—while keep­ing a safe dis­tance apart. We now talk over the fence to neigh­bours we’ve ig­nored for years. We wave to the Ama­zon courier. 6park.com
In my city and many oth­ers, the new friend­li­ness is plain from all the draw­ings of rain­bows hang­ing in win­dows. The rain­bows orig­i­nated in Italy, where the pan­demic ar­rived early and with sud­den vengeance. Kids, stuck in­doors and their world up­ended, drew them along with the mes­sage “an­drà tutto bene”—ev­ery­thing will be fine. The rain­bows soon started ap­pear­ing around the world and es­pe­cially in Canada, in farm­ing towns and in down­town condo cor­ri­dors alike. 6park.com
We were in­spired to cel­e­brate such acts of good­will and gen­eros­ity with our first ever Reader’s Di­gest Kind­ness Awards. We in­vited sub­mis­sions from read­ers, who sent us heart­warm­ing sto­ries from across the coun­try.
