South and North Korea restore communication channels

South and North Korea have restored their once-severed① communication lines② last Tuesday as part of efforts by the two countries’ leaders to rebuild strained③ ties. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have exchanged multiple letters since April and agreed to reconnect the communication lines. North Korea cut the hotline④ in June 2020 as cross-border ties soured⑤ after a failed second summit in February 2019 between Kim and former US President Donald Trump. Shortly afterwards, North Korea blew up an inter-Korean joint liaison office in the border that had been built to improve communications. (The Guardian) 6park.com

China sent a new ambassador to the US

Qin Gang, China’s new ambassador to the United States, arrived in Washington last Wednesday. Qin, 55, most recently was China’s vice foreign minister and has been ministry spokesperson twice, is replacing China’s longest serving ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, 68, who announced his departure in June after eight years in Washington. Qin served three tours① at the Chinese Embassy in London and headed the Protocol Department. The post of the US ambassador to China has been vacant since October, when Republican Terry Branstad stepped down to help with Trump’s reelection campaign. (AP News and VOA) 6park.com

The Fed moved closer to the decision on ‘tapering①’ the massive stimulus

The Federal Reserve inched② towards scaling back③ the easy-money policies④, following a meeting of policymakers that highlighted both the promise and the perils of the American recovery. At the end of a two-day meeting last Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee declared that it had made “progress” towards its goals of full employment and 2 per cent average inflation. The statement marked the first milestone in the US central bank’s steady drive towards a decision on reducing its $120bn in monthly debt purchases at future meetings, a move that could come later this year or early next year. The FOMC meeting comes at a time of conflicting economic signals. Inflation has been much higher than expected since US central bank officials last met in June, while the spread of the Delta virus variant across the US has renewed concerns about the labour market and growth.

The US seized① an Epic of Gilgamesh tablet

The US Department of Justice last Tuesday has ordered the forfeiture② of a 3600-year-old cuneiform tablet that bears part of The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the world’s oldest works of literature, from the crafts retailer Hobby Lobby. The Gilgamesh Dream Tablet was imported illegally into the United States in the early 2000s and purchased by Hobby Lobby for display at the Museum of the Bible in Washington. The tablet measures 6 inches by 5 inches and is written in the Akkadian language, and originated in Mesopotamia, in modern-day Iraq. A DOJ statement said the tablet was encrusted③ with dirt and unreadable when it was purchased by a US antiquities dealer in 2003. The DOJ said the tablet was sold by the unnamed antiques dealer in 2007 with a “false letter of provenance④.” It passed through several owners, before being sold to Hobby Lobby in a private sale in 2014. Iraq has filed a petition for the tablet’s recovery with US Customs and Border Protection. (The Independent) 6park.com
