In and around Jinling (金陵), the Six Dynasties (六朝) took turns to rise and fall. Jinling was the last one standing. It survived as a legend. Like every good legend, Jinling enjoyed and is still enjoying an inexhaustible supply of stories made up for it. In these stories, larger-than-life characters walk us through the labyrinths that will end with this inevitable conclusion: life is but a dream.

Jinling was a free-floating dream on the Yangzi (Yangtze) River. Not every dream had a happy ending, however. One could hear the Yangzi River singing blues, only to be overwhelmed by the waves of Guangling (廣陵) east of Jinling.

Meanwhile, the pipa (琵琶) player played no more. She just watched flowers tearing themselves apart in the wind.

In this river village, the impoverished fisherfolk stayed up all night. Where’s their fair share of Jiangnan’s wealth in return for a lifetime of backbreaking labor? No answer. What they heard were wild geese chorusing their way to somewhere more hospitable.

Confucius once asked rhetorically, “How is it even possible that human beings are not better than birds (可以人而不如鳥乎)?” Of course, the sage meant to assert human wisdom. He was never supposed to wonder if wild geese might turn out to fare better than the fisherfolk.
