Storyline:
As Singapore assumes chairmanship of ASEAN-China relations in 2018, we take a look at how the Silk Road is impacting Indochina. Starting in Yunnan where a mega dam is transforming the entire Indochina ecosystem; we move on to Myanmar- home of a huge petrochemical/ port project; onwards to Laos and Cambodia- two of China's most steadfast ASEAN allies; and finally to Thailand where a new mega rail project is underway.
Host Anthony Morse comes from Myanmar/ Thailand and this will be an especially personal trip to meet his family/ friends whose lives are impacted by the Silk Road. 6park.com

Episode 2: Myanmar
A major industrial zone and port is being constructed in the Northwestern Rakhine state in the Kyauk Pyu port. It is expected to create 100,000 jobs and will certainly change the flow of global trade. Goods to/from China will now be shipped here and trucked to Yunnan and other Southern parts of China instead of passing around the Straits of Malacca. Already an oil pipeline has been laid from Kyauk Pyu all the way to Yunnan, which will supply 6 percent of China’s oil imports when fully functional.
Aside from the implications on the Rohingya crisis (since the project is built in Rakhine), how will this grand plan affect the rest of ASEAN?
For decades, China was the main economic outlet for a Myanmar squeezed by Western sanctions, making it the largest cumulative investor in one of Asia’s poorest countries. But Myanmar’s transition from military to civilian rule is now opening the door to rival prospectors.
The Myanmar example shows important lessons on the Silk Road.
For the Chinese - how will they deal with uncertainty over their investments? What happens when a democratic transition of government knocks down previous business deals?
For small states- how does Chinese investment impact the local population? How do the ordinary Burmese view their mighty neighbors? And what are the options for a government that is hungry for investment, and yet democratically elected and answerable to its people?
6park.com
