better fortitude /Of Patience and Heroic Martyrdom/unsung,即更值得歌唱的坚韧的耐心和英雄的烈士心情。另外还说了写诗的动机是来源于上天女神,而不是他自己,尽管他开始构思得很晚(即年纪大了)而且构思了很久,有可能因为年龄和其它原因写不完,但他坚信因为有女神相助他能写完。按照惯例,史诗必须有个英雄的主题,弥尔顿认为他的史诗的主题也是个英雄的主题。注意heroic song在这里是双关。一指史诗,二指英雄。
