by exchange, and Rogers Fund, by exchange, 2010 (2010.206) 6park.com

The shape of the dish, which alludes to the famed 6park.com

Mount Fuji, indicates that it was commissioned 6park.com

by a Japanese patron, most likely for a meal that 6park.com

accompanied the tea ceremony. The inscription, 6park.com

which discusses roaming with deer and horses 6park.com

in a landscape, is an allusion to a similar phrase in 6park.com

the writings of the Chinese philosopher Mencius.

This vase records two texts titled "Ode on the Red Cliff," 6park.com

masterpieces composed by the beloved poet and 6park.com

statesman SuShi (1037-1101) in the autumn and winter of 6park.com

1082. Its square form elegantly accommodates the two 6park.com

stories in both text and image. When Su visited the site, 6park.com

it was already rich with historical significance owing 6park.com

to the famous Battle of Red Cliff, believed to have been 6park.com

fought there at the end of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.- 6park.com

A.D. 220), but it was forever transformed by his famous 6park.com

poems and soon became a popular theme across all 6park.com

media. Central to both poems is the social aspect of the excursions.

fields that feature the double-headed eagle and pierced 6park.com

heart of the Augustinians, as well as pairs of facing lions, 6park.com

peacocks, elephants, and pine trees with birds. The prevalence
of the Catholic order's device, also found on Chinese textiles, acknowledges
the prominent role played by the Augustinians in the Spanish Pacific as both
religious and imperial agents- active not only as missionaries, but also as mariners,
scholars, and diplomats.

Dish with the Baptism of Christ 6park.com

China, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), 6park.com

ca. 1715-25 Porcelain with cobalt blue under 6park.com

transparent glaze Gift of R. Albuquerque, 2016  6park.com

This exceptionally large dish is one of the earliest known 6park.com

Chinese porcelains to feature a Christian narrative subject. 6park.com

The scene of Christ's baptism by Saint John in the river 6park.com

Jordan--based on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, cited on 6park.com

the rim of the dish-probably copies a European print or 6park.com

book illustration. The tall trees and rocky riverbanks evoke 6park.com

the wilderness setting of the biblical account, which 6park.com

contrasts with the six small Chinese landscape vignettes encircling the central scene.

Close examination of the cobalt blue used to paint 6park.com

this dish shows areas of darker blue. Known as 6park.com

"heaped and piled," this effect is a result of imperfect 6park.com

control of the pigment during firing. This effect 6park.com

disappeared in the early fifteenth century, when 6park.com

potters further mastered the use of this pigment.

The theme of winged animals, in this case a horse, an elephant, a mongoose, a fish, a rabbit, and
two cervids, was most likely inspired by the extraordinary 6park.com

court-sponsored maritime expeditions of the early fifteenth century, in which a Chinese fleet, under the direction of Zheng He (1371-1433), reached the coast of Africa.
