I see many answers here are saying China. Here is the deal, China should have won, there should only be one Korea today because China should have been able to win. Consider these points. China had unlimited manpower. The Korean Penninsula is not suitable for armored warefare. It is a perfect place for an infantry heavy army such as China. Secondly China should have won because of the relatively short supply lines. The border between China and South Korea is only about 250 miles. Compare that with the US or other allied countries being more than 5000 miles away. China had all of the advantages yet we still have two Koreas. Kicking the UN forces out of North Korea is irrelevant. China had the means to kick the UN forces out of the entire Korean Penninsula but yet there are still two Koreas today. This should not be the case. The only reason that could explain is because China failed in a goal (uniting the Koreas into a single communist nation). Yes China scored some early victories but all of those victories were for nothing because China sufferred some great defeats later on causing China to be driven out of South Korea. Had China stopped at the 38th parrallel then you could say China would have won but since China was driven out of South Korea then you could have three answers. The first is that no one won. The second you could say the Allies won because South Korea gained a bit more land at the signing of the armistace. The third answer is again the Allies won because they prevent communism from taking over the entire pennisula and both China and North Korea failed at this goal. China’s failure to unify Korea was even more pronounced because it had the means to take over the entire pennisula. So China definitely didn’t win even though it should have won.
